Diving Little Corn Island Nicaragua

The Corn Islands (Big Corn and Little Corn Island) off the eastern coast of Nicaragua are probably two of the least known dive destination in the Caribbean. Devote of large chain resorts and typical tourist attractions the islands maintain their sleepy character and attract visitors keen on finding a dreamy escape with exceptionally reasonable prices. The islands are typically accessed through Big Corn Island’s airport serviced by daily flights from the capital city of Managua.  Little Corn Island is then reached by water taxis running twice daily between the islands and coordinated with arrival and departure time of flights to/from Managua. With a combined area of 13 sqKm and less than 7000 residents, the islands have two major ways of supporting their economy; year round tourism and the seasonal Lobster catch.

Fotonji.com – Photographing the World Underwater (& above)

Launching fotonji.com proved to be a far more complex and draining process than I imagined. It started with a promising and naive notion; I’ll just do it myself, how hard can it be? Followed by many late nights spent exporting flash slideshows from Lightroom and integrating them in existing templates, leading to many more nights learning about backend and front end engines, SEO, permalinks, geo-tagging, complimentary colors, blogging (such a contradiction for those choosing the picture over 1000 words), hosting, multiple design ideas and designers that vanished into thin air after reading the specs etc. With Flash being my starting point you can guess how far I had to go. Thankfully or should I say luckily I had the pleasure of working with Tom who’s been patiently listening and turning ideas into functioning pages. Thank you Tom!

While the gestation period was long it came with the benefit of do-over. A privilege that comes to an end once the site goes live.  Now there is the challenge of new-content creation and the inevitable exposure to deal with.  Fortunately, there is no shortage of exotic and remote destinations to dive and photograph.

Fotonji.com is an online portfolio and Photo-Blog . My main aim here is to share recent underwater work and write about destinations and experiences while diving but you may come across some other odd and interesting photography as well. Anything from Street Photography in New York City to Volcanoes in Kauai to new experiments and possibly some technical review of underwater cameras, housing and techniques… Since most of us are not lucky enough to have a dive site in our backyard SCUBA and underwater photography typically mean packing bags of equipment and heading to the airport to catch one of several flights that would lead to ferry rides leading to car pickups followed by a dingy ride to reach a remote island.  Travel and the top-side are therefore, an integral part of the overall diving experience and will be on display as well. Just click on the Map where you can find many galleries not included in the Photography section!

So go ahead, have a look around, imagine the white sand between your toes, count down the surface interval, subscribe to the feed and feel free to drop a comment. Whether you’re looking to license assets for a project, commission a shoot, ideas for new dive destinations, your website, or just happened to get here browsing, I hope you enjoy it and be back for more.
